When a DP system issue occurs, the first checks are often carried out by the vessel’s technical team. The ability to identify the source of a problem, check system interfaces and data, and collect the right diagnostic information can help speed up troubleshooting and make further service support more effective.
Navis DP Control System Maintenance Training is designed for technical personnel responsible for the operation and maintenance of DP-equipped vessels.
The course combines technical knowledge with hands-on practice using the NAVIS NavDP 4000 test bench and simulator. Participants learn how the system works, how to identify common faults and how to carry out initial diagnostics independently.
The training prepares technical personnel to:
50% or more of the course can be dedicated to practical inreractions with DP control system.
Participants work directly with the NavDP 4000 test bench, system hardware, interfaces and diagnostic tools. Practical exercises can include tracing signals and wiring, checking communication, identifying interface problems, working with DP Shell and solving simulated system faults.
Simulated fault scenarios allow participants to practise troubleshooting in conditions that reflect the types of technical problems they may encounter onboard.
A practical assessment can also be included at the end of the training.
Already operating a Navis DP system?
The training can be adapted to the vessel and its installed configuration.
Part of the course can be dedicated to the actual DP system, including its architecture, drawings, thruster and sensor interfaces and vessel-specific technical questions.
This gives the technical team an opportunity to discuss the system used onboard and connect the training directly to daily responsibilities.
The balance between theory and practical exercises can also be adjusted according to the participants’ experience and training objectives.
Dynamic Positioning principles, DP classification, Navis DP user interface and basic system operation.
Sensor and PRS interfaces, communication, COM port data, wiring and common communication problems.
System hardware, onboard installation, cabling diagrams, internal and external drawings, power supply and common hardware issues.
Command and feedback signals, PLC modules, interface wiring and troubleshooting of common interface problems.
Feedback packages, software updates, logging and diagnostic procedures.
Setting up remote access for Navis Service support.
Simulated problems and hands-on fault finding using the NAVIS NavDP 4000 test bench.
Participants should have a technical background and good knowledge of electronics, computers and network technologies.

Small groups provide more time for direct interaction with the equipment, practical exercises and discussion of vessel-specific technical questions.
The training is provided by Navis specialists working with DP systems and their maintenance. The focus is on technical knowledge and troubleshooting methods that can be applied when working with DP systems onboard.
For vessels already equipped with a Navis DP system, the training can be tailored to the installed configuration and the technical needs of the vessel team.
