From simulation to vessel control
During the 1990s, the company began developing its own vessel control technologies, including steering control, autopilot, track keeping and dynamic positioning.
The first prototype of the Navis dynamic positioning system was developed in 1999.
In 2000, in partnership with Beier Integrated Systems of Slidell Louisiana, the first Navis DP system was commissioned on board Candy Pioneer in Morgan City, Louisiana, USA. Beier continues to represent the brand in the USA.
This marked the transition from engineering development to a growing international business in vessel manoeuvring and positioning control.
Building an international presence
During the 2000s, Navis Engineering continued to expand its presence in international markets, building relationships with shipowners, shipyards, system integrators and technology partners worldwide.
In 2005, Navis Engineering Oy was established in Finland, providing a base for the company’s continued international growth.
As the business expanded, dynamic positioning, autopilot and joystick control became the core areas around which the Navis Engineering product portfolio continued to develop.
Bourbon fleet programme
An important milestone came through cooperation with Bourbon and Beier Integrated Systems. Navis Engineering was selected to supply DP systems for the Bourbon Liberty programme, establishing the technology across a significant series of offshore vessels.
In 2006, a contract was signed for the delivery of 76 DP2 systems for the Bourbon Liberty 100 and 200 series, later extended to the Liberty 150 series.
The programme became an important reference for Navis Engineering and demonstrated the ability to deliver DP technology consistently across a large fleet programme.
Pioneering technologies
Innovation continued to shape the development of Navis systems. Over the following years, Navis Engineering introduced a number of pioneering solutions, including the first touchscreen interface for DP control and the world’s first waterjet-driven crew boat controlled by NavDP.
NavDP was also applied to advanced DP2 fast support vessels and vessels with unconventional propulsion and thruster configurations.

Today, Navis Engineering Oy is an independent Finnish company developing vessel control technologies for the international maritime market.
Headquartered in Finland, the company combines decades of experience in vessel dynamics and control with continuous development of dynamic positioning, joystick and autopilot technologies. Its engineering capabilities are supported by the company’s office in Bulgaria, strengthening product development, project delivery and customer support internationally.
Navis Engineering systems are used on vessels around the world, while the company continues to develop its technologies and expertise.
The technology has evolved considerably since the company’s first mathematical vessel models, but the fundamental focus remains the same: understanding vessel motion and developing control systems for demanding marine operations.
