DP Capability Plot

Before investing in a new vessel, propulsion upgrade or new operation, it is important to understand whether the planned propulsion configuration can provide the required station-keeping capability.

A DP Capability Plot assesses vessel capability against defined environmental conditions. It can also be used to estimate the propulsion capacity required to meet a specific operating requirement.

The calculation provides an engineering basis for vessel design, propulsion upgrades and operational planning.

When is a DP Capability Plot needed?

Newbuild design

Determine the propulsion configuration and power required to achieve the specified station-keeping capability.

Retrofit planning

Compare current vessel capability with proposed modifications and evaluate the expected improvement before investment.

New operation or tender

Assess vessel capability against the wind, wave and current conditions of a specific project or operating area.

Independent capability assessment

Obtain a second opinion on DP capability calculations or results provided by a shipyard or design company.

Why capability matters

Both insufficient and excessive propulsion capacity have consequences. Under-sizing can limit the vessel’s operating envelope and its suitability for specific projects or environmental conditions. Over-sizing can increase equipment and construction costs, installed power and fuel consumption. A DP Capability Plot provides an engineering basis for matching propulsion capacity to the vessel’s intended operating requirements.

How does a DP Capability Plot work?

The calculation compares environmental forces caused by wind, waves and current with the forces available from the vessel’s propulsion system. The results are presented as a polar diagram showing the calculated station-keeping limits.

At Navis, every Capability Plot goes through two stages

1. Capability calculation

Theoretical station-keeping capability is calculated from vessel data, propulsion information and agreed environmental conditions.

2. Expert DP engineer review

The results are reviewed by a DP engineer with over 25 years of DP experience. The engineer assesses the calculated results from a practical DP perspective and identifies input data or assumptions that may require closer attention.

Where required, the engineer can also assess what changes in propulsion power or configuration may be needed to achieve the target capability.

A Capability Plot shows where the limit is and what can be improved to increase station-keeping capability.

Working with Navis

We offer a professional Capability Plot service at reasonable rates that can be offset against any resulting DP projects. This includes:

Direct engineer communication

Project requirements, input data and results can be discussed directly with the engineers performing the calculation.

Early-stage projects

The calculation can be started before final vessel drawings are available. Existing project data can first be reviewed to determine what additional information is required.

Up to 5 working days

Typical delivery time once all required project data has been provided. Depending on the project scope and available data, delivery may be faster.

Up to 3 revisions

Configurations or agreed assumptions can be adjusted and recalculated as the project develops.

Different levels of capability assessment

Navis can provide different levels of DP capability assessment depending on the project requirements. Most projects are performed using a Level 2 assessment, while Level 3 assessment is available on request for projects requiring more advanced analysis. Scope and pricing depend on the selected assessment level.

Request a DP Capability Plot

Price: €999*

To prepare a DP Capability Plot, we typically need:

See our Capability Plot RFQ form for details of the information typically needed to start the calculation. If some information is not yet available, we can review the available project data and advise what else is needed to proceed.

How it works

1. Send a request
Submit the form below with your contact details.

2. We contact you and review the project data
We will contact you to collect the available vessel information and project documentation. Our engineer will review the data and advise if anything else is needed.

3. Confirm the order and payment
Once the scope and input data are agreed, we confirm the order and issue an invoice for €999*.

4. Calculation and delivery
Your DP Capability Plot is prepared and reviewed by an experienced DP engineer and delivered within up to 5 working days once sufficient project data is available.

* Price: €999

If the project proceeds with a Navis DP system, the full €999 Capability Plot fee will be credited towards the DP system order.
