Workboats, Tugboats & Survey

NavDP began life on small manoeuvrable craft and has consistently focused on installations that suit confined bridges and fast settling and reaction times suited to smaller vessels. While Navis specialise in class approved and compliant systems we can also offer exceptional value for installations that do not need to meet class requirements with DP0 and single joystick control of complex thruster systems.

Challenges facing this segment

Smallest bridge footprint

In crowded workboat bridges efficient use of space is a priority. Navis have developed custom controls as small as 5 inches by 5 inches and have adopted a flexible component-based architecture that can be distributed into the most confined bridges. Its portable control station, typically used to bring functionality out onto bridge wings, is a favourite of NavDP customers as are the large number of monitor sizes and formats supported. Industry standard dimming controls are available as both master and slave.

Reducing Vessel wear

Navis recognise their responsibility in keeping your vessel operational by avoiding unnecessary wear and tear. Control of your thrusters, propellors and rudders is a task we undertake with due attention to unnecessary wear. Features such as our smooth stopping and adaptive propulsion control and optimisation of propeller pitch vs speed makes NavDP and Thruster control a favourite of the Workboat, Tugboat & Survey community.

High situational awareness

Navis supports charts, asset plans and cable/pipe routes mapped onto its charting system. With the increasing availability of scanning based sensors (Laser and Radar) Navis now support live scans to be mapped onto the DP chart allowing for maximum situational awareness whether looking out of the window though a cluttered construction environment or onto the screen.

Autonomous and Unmanned Operations

Increasingly remote and unmanned operations are being considered: Sim-Ops in offshore construction and remote tug and barge control. Navis has recognised that a DP control desk can be located remote from the vessel and has developed systems, initially for Naval applications for use in offshore commercial applications. Controlling the bow of a barge from the push tug can now become a reality.

Improved Vessel productivity

NavDP have been pioneers in multi-speed DP systems allowing operators to dynamically adjust speed through operations. This feature can be combined with adaptive draught control to dynamically change the parameters and limits according to the available draught making it an ideal partner of more complex thruster systems such as Voith Schneider or water jet.

Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Ease of maintenance in challenged locations

Navis systems are built from commercial off the shelf components where possible giving our customers access to the widest spares market possible and making most repairs a case of plug and play with occasional remote support. Our business is outstanding vessel control and our worldwide service network exist in support of that.

Safest Operations

Fundamentally we recognise that our number one priority it to keep your vessel safe and working. It’s why we have pioneered cyber secure systems with resilient architecture and support for the widest sensory inputs. Our intuitive interfaces and features to minimise DP and Navigator load have underpinned forty years of successful system supply.

Discuss your vessel control requirements

Whether for a newbuild, retrofit or upgrade, our team can help define a compact and effective vessel control solution around your vessel and its operational requirements.

Here is what our customers and partners say about their experience.

”Being harbor maneuvers, sailing in narrow channels, anchoring in areas with strong wind or current, it operates flawlessly. Operations in JP modes are extraordinary and very convincing.”

Lars Thrane
Chairman, Lars Thrane A/S M.Sc.E.E., Ph.D.

”We are very happy with its operation, the system is very precise and performing in all its modes, The DPS system is fantastic, it works very well in both our propulsion modes, Diesel and electric.”

Giorgio Prato
S/Y KAURIS IV, Genova

”There are new Min Power Heading and Hold Area modes when vessel is on standby outside of installation’s 500m zone!”
